Well, it is official. The Ouya, an open source casual console looking to sell for 100 bucks has reached its Kickstarter goals quite handily, and will be developed. The Ouya is a more open ended console which uses the Android platform by Google.

At it’s core, this console is all about being able to depart from the traditional norms of the gaming industry- norms bound by 60 dollar games, expensive DLC, and rigid limitations on modding of any kind.

The Ouya is going to feature an array of gaming options, including free to play models, demos, and more. As digital downloads become the most prevailing thing and the market shifts to a more casual and accessible direction, it is poised to take the lead in a more fluid and dynamic market that is ore shaped by the gamers than the companies themselves.

The Ouya is an exciting prospect to consider, because it is a departure from the norms which have developed in the video game console industry of late. As more and more people are exposed to games, the need for something simple and accessible and affordable becomes more important than ever.

All in all, this project is one that looks to a more “open source” future, one that does not require monopolies by big developers who lock down console abilities and code and stall when it comes to innovation.

Gamers of any persuasion should follow the Ouya with interest- at the very least, it is an interesting experiment to remember.
