For most young people, technology is a big part of everyday life. Computers, laptops, smartphones, and tablets are often introduced to children at a very young age. This early - and consistent exposure - has created a generation that is extremely knowledgeable about most devices. In fact, it is believed that the average 6 year old child understands more about technology than a 45 year old adult!

Because the younger generation is so comfortable with technology, they are often called upon to answer questions and solve problems. While many are more than happy to teach their parents and grandparents about their devices, they also want their loved ones to take full advantage of the different programs and apps that surround them.

The number one thing your child wants you to learn (and use!) is Google. Because the younger generation is so accustomed to using their devices, they know that there is a wealth information available to anyone willing to do a simple search. That’s why it can become extremely frustrating when their parents and grandparents continue to ask them questions about things they could find out on their own. Just as parent want their kids to take an interest in their own education, kids want their parents to be actively engaged in their technological education. Simply asking Google your questions will start you on the path to lifelong learning.

Granted Google does not have all the answers. But with more information being posted on the Internet every single day, you will be amazed at what you can find. Do you want to know if your tablet can print? Ask Google. Do you want to know how to crop a photo with your smartphone? Ask Google. Being able to ask a question and find an answer about technology is vital to your continued learning.

There are two easy ways to use Google. The first is the more standard method. Open up a new window on your Internet browser. Type in google.com. When you see the google search box, type in your question. When you push enter, the top-rated answers will show up on your screen. You can even set up Google as your homepage so that every time you open up a new window, a Google search box is the first thing you see.

Of course, if you are using a smartphone or tablet, it’s even easier to use Google. The first thing you do is download the Google app. Then, whenever you have a question, simply open the app and type in your question. You can even make it simpler, by pushing the microphone icon and saying “Ok Google.” Then all you have to do is speak your question and Google will pull up the best answers.

Technology can be overwhelming at times. However, when you utilize Google, it’s like you are carrying around your own personal teacher in your pocket. Instead of calling your child or grandchild with your next question, try Googling it first. You will be amazed at what you can do with just a little technological guidance to help you on your way.
